COPA DEL REY | ATLETI-REAL MADRID

Round of 16 Cup derby at home

We will face Real Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey on Thursday 18 January, starting at 9:30, at the Cívitas Metropolitano.

The Copa del Rey returns to the Cívitas Metropolitano five years later. For the first time since 16 January 2019, the home of all the Atleti fans will host a Copa del Rey knockout round. The match against Real Madrid will be played on Thursday 18 January at 9:30pm and will be directed by Cuadra Fernández, assisted by González Fuertes from the VOR.

The Red & White team is looking to redeem themselves from their last game against Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup. For their part, Real Madrid come into this game on the back of a 4-1 win over FC Barcelona in the final of the tournament.

In recent years, Atleti and Real Madrid have met on several occasions in the Copa del Rey, the last occasion being last season in the quarter-finals at the Santiago Bernabéu. On that occasion the result went in favour of the home side (3-1), who equalised Morata's first-half goal and in extra time, managed to turn the scoreline around.

The last time the derby was played in a last-16 tie was in 2015, when the ties were still a two-legged affair. In the first leg, at the Santiago Bernabéu, the score was 2-2 with Fernando Torres scoring twice. The second leg was decided by a 2-0 win with goals from Raúl García from 11 metres and Giménez.

This season, Simeone's side have already won a derby at home by 3-1, thanks to goals from Morata twice and Griezmann.
