Filipe Luis: “We want to have a good end to the season and finish higher”

“We have to continue along this line and help out or teammates”

Filipe Luis played a good game on Saturday in his return to the starting line-up. The Atletico left back was a bastion in defense and a dagger in attack. He assisted Agüero on the goal that gave them a 2-1 lead, and afterwards stated “we needed a win like that against a high-quality opponent such as Villarreal. It leaves us very happy and gives us lots of joy to help us keep working. It’s been a complicated season for everyone, but I believe that we can finish it very well. We want to have a good end to the season and finish higher.”

With respect to his assist to Agüero on the second goal, Filipe Luis played down the importance of his pass. “Kun was the protagonist, as he finished perfectly in front of Diego López. I gave the pass but I had the help of my teammates, who made the runs and gave me the pass. It went well and I’m happy for the team.”

Regarding whether we saw the old Filipe from Deportivo in the match against Villarreal, an incisive player with spark, a flash down the flank and firm in defense, he said that “obviously you can’t play like that every game, but not only here or at Depor or anywhere. I’m always the same, although there will be matches where I play better and others not so much, but I’m always going to bring the same excitement and desire. The main thing is for the team to win.”

The all-around solid match against Villarreal obscured others from earlier in the season. Filipe Luis commented that “when the team wants to win, has to win and has problems if it doesn’t win, it’s a team. We simply have to continue along this line of wanting, helping our teammates and playing good football. That’s the key.”

Atlético de Madrid needed goals from Forlán. “Exactly. We needed Forlán to score a goal. He’s a very well-liked player by the entire squad and we need him to be playing well because he’s a key player, a reference point in attack.”
