D. Godín: 'The clash against Real is fundamental to our aspirations”
“It’s an important game and we’ll have to play to the death”
Diego Godín positively assessed the win in Pamplona against Osasuna and assured that “getting the three points was difficult and we earned them in a complicated stadium. We were coming off a break in league play and now we have to back up that win against Real Sociedad. The match against the Basque side is fundamental to our aspirations.”
The centre back knows that they need the victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday and explained that “we’re really looking forward to the game. It’s been an inconsistent season and now we depend on ourselves. It’s an important game and we’ll have to play to the death. We have to earn the largest number of points possible until the end of the season.”
The Uruguayan acknowledged that the players haven’t studied the number of points that they need to win a spot in European competitions. “I haven’t done it. Although we know that we’re still in time to be able to earn a spot in Europe. The reality is that we have to approach each game like a final. We can’t look beyond the next fixture. We won a tough match against Osasuna and now we have another tough one against Real Sociedad,” he stressed.
The ‘rojiblanco’ players can’t explain the reasons for the squad’s inconsistent season and said that “we’ve lost a lot of points and have lacked consistency, but I don’t know why. If we had the key, we would have resolved it. Our goal is a bit far, but now we’re fighting for Europa League.
“Personally, I’m happy and confident. I’m playing and I feel like I’m in good form. The team won last week and is excited. We train differently during the week if we’ve won on Sunday,” he highlighted.
Diego isn’t thinking about the games to be played by Atlético de Madrid’s direct rivals, which could help them in their quest. “We’re only focused on winning our games. Obviously, it’s good if our rivals leave a few points behind along the way,” he asserted.
Godín knows Villarreal, his former club, very well, and they’re one of the teams that Atlético de Madrid is battling for a spot in a European competition. “They’re one of the side that could drop some points. They’re playing in the Europa League and that wears you out and distracts you; it happened to Atlético last season. They have a nice cushion of points, but we have to go game-to-game,” he stated.

It’s normal for names of possible signings to appear at this point in the season. We have to focus on our job and ignore what comes out in the press,” he said.
“Forlán is fine, he spoke to the coach. He really wants to play, and he seems fine to me. He’s recovering from his hurt ankle and training well after a long time with problems in that ankle,” Godín wrapped up.
