The first half of the match was marked by the equality between both teams. Atlético de Madrid persistently searched for the goal without success. On the other hand, Málaga defended themselves in an orderly manner and looked for quick getaways in the counterattack without putting Courtois in any danger. The best chances to score in these first forty-five minutes were for Villa and Koke, but the Atléticos had no luck. Juanfran’s right-wing centres were becoming very dangerous, and making many problems for Málaga. The interval arrived without a score from any of the teams.

In the second half, Alderweireld scored the equaliser after a corner kick, tying the goal Samu had scored minutes before. Málaga on the counterattack was dangerous with their fast getaways. After the Belgian defence’s goal, Atlético’s players kept fighting for the victory goal. They we close enough several times, with a shot from Diego Ribas, a header from Villa and, above all, with a great play from Adrián that ended with a great save from Caballero in game’s last effort.
