Mario Suárez: 'We have to beat Sevilla to continue along this positive line”

“We have to focus on our goal, which is to fight for Europe”

Mario Suárez attended to the media after the training session held on Wednesday the 23rd at the Majadahonda Sports Complex. The ‘rojiblanco’ central midfielder spoke about the team’s situation after their win over Zaragoza and how they’re anxiously looking forward to the fixture against Sevilla to confirm their improved form.

Mario, who returned to work with his teammates after overcoming a fever, assure that even though he feels “a bit weak,” he feels “good enough to train right now.” Furthermore, he appeared satisfied about finally having earned a victory that seemed to be resisting the team. “We’d been looking for a win for a while and we got it on Saturday. I think that we deserved it and now we have to back it up with a good game at home against a good opponent in Sevilla in order to beat them and continue along this positive line. Luck also was on our side because they hit the crossbar twice in the last few minutes, and in other matches they would have gone in,” highlighted the central midfielder.

Concerning their upcoming opponent, Sevilla, Mario emphasized his eagerness to play the match to confirm the good feelings from La Romareda, and even more so “against an opponent that we really want to bat and with whom we’ve had a special rivalry in recent years. This has been a normal work week, as always with intensity and looking ahead to Saturday’s fixture with a desire for it to get here so we can play it and win it. We also want to strengthen the pursuit of our goal, which is to battle for Europe. We have to earn the points in any way we can,” he stated.

In spite of having broken the losing streak in which the team found itself, the Atlético ‘4’ assured that “I prefer to go step-by-step, from Sunday-to-Sunday, and not think beyond that. The only important thing to me is my near future, and that’s this Saturday’s game, earning the three points, and then we’ll think about the next one.”

He was asked about the possibility of Sevilla coming in tired after having to play in European competition mid-week. Mario replied that “we know what it is to play Thursday-Sunday, and that’s what they’re doing. It will be tiresome for them, but we have to worry about ourselves and come out at 110 percent on Saturday.”

To finish, the central midfielder referred to the injury which led to Diego Forlán heading to the dressing room early during the training session. “He left with a knock. Obviously he’s important for us and right now we need everyone available and together, because we all have to help out,' he commented.
