CHOSEN TO WEAR THE ARMBAND

Koke, Oblak, Giménez, Saúl to captain Atleti in 2019/20 season

Our four international players will be the new leaders of the changing room.

Our team has chosen the players that will wear the captain’s armband during the 2019/20 season. Koke – who was already one of our captains – will be joined by Saúl, Giménez and Oblak as leaders of the changing room.

Koke (Madrid, Spain, 08/01/1992) joined our club as a six-year-old. A product of our Academy, he made his first team debut in 2009, and is a member of the first squad since 2010. Koke is a Spain international and has won seven trophies at our club: one Copa del Rey (2013), one LaLiga (2013/14), one Spanish Super Cup (2014), two UEFA Super Cups (2012 and 2018) and two Europa League titles (2012 and 2018).

Jan Oblak (Škofja Loka, Slovenia, 07/01/1993) joined Atleti in 2014. In the meantime, he has won four straight Zamora Trophies and is one of the five goalkeepers with the most games in our club’s history. Since he arrived, Oblak has won one Spanish Super Cup (2014), one Europa League (2017/18) and one UEFA Super Cup (2018). The 26-year-old has also made the UEFA Champions League Team of the Year in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, the Europa League Best XI in 2017/18 and has been named Slovenian Player of the Year in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

José María Giménez (Toledo, Uruguay, 20/01/1995) arrived at our club as an 18-year-old in April 2013. The Uruguay international made his Atleti debut on Sep. 14, 2013 against Almería. At 24, he’s one of our defensive leaders thanks to his quality and character. The centre-back has won one LaLiga title (2013/14), one Spanish Super Cup (2014), one UEFA Super Cup (2018) and one Europa League (2017/18).

Saúl (Elche, Spain, 21/11/1994) is another product of our Academy, which he joined in 2008. He made his first team debut in the 2011/12 season as a 17-year-old during a Europa League game against Besiktas. The Spaniard became a first squad member in the 2014/15 season and is an international. At our club, he’s won one Copa del Rey (2013), one Spanish Super Cup (2014), one UEFA Super Cup (2018) and two Europa League titles (2012 and 2018).

We would like to congratulate our new captains and wish them the best of luck in the exciting season ahead.
