Godín will be the team’s third captain

The first team’s third captain has a name and surname: Diego Godín. The Uruguayan joins Gabi and Raúl García in this role in the team when he’s starting his fifth season with the Club.

Diego Godín will be the third captain of the red and white team for the 2014-15 season, which will be the fifth one the Uruguayan midfield plays with Atlético de Madrid. The Uruguayan arrived to win the 2010 European Supercup against Inter Milan, premiering there his track record of red and white titles, because he then won the 2012 Europa League, again the European Supercup against Chelsea that same year, the King’s Cup in 2013 and the League in 2014 where he scored a goal against Barcelona at Camp Nou.

He played a leading role in the Champions final scoring the res and white goal and furthermore, in Brazil’s World Cup, he was key to Oscar Washington Tabárez, as captain and indisputable first team player in all of Uruguay’s games. In addition, he scored the winning goal against Italy, identical to that at Camp Nou, that made his National Team go through to the round of 16.

In statements to the Atlético web, Godín said, “I’m very excited to be one of the Club’s three captains. It’s an enormous source of pride and happiness for me. I want to keep contributing what I can to the team. I identify with the Club because this is my home. I want to give it all as a captain too”.


The Uruguayan admitted that “2014 has been a spectacular year for me. Actually, it’s being the best year of my sporting career. The hardest thing is holding up and I want to keep growing. It’s been a great year for everything that’s happened to me, the League title is impressive, the goal at Camp Nou, the Champions final, and the World Cup. It was beautiful winning in England and Italy, the latter with a goal from me. In addition, being captain of Uruguay’s National Team was very special”.
