Domínguez: “We’re going out to win our next two matches”

“From here on out we have to win all of the points at home”

Álvaro Domínguez was the player in charge of attending to the media at a press conference at the end of the training on Monday 28 February at the Majadahonda Sports Complex. The ‘rojiblanco’ defender considers the next two fixtures to be vital to the future of the squad, especially after a draw against Sevilla that the centre-half found unjust.

Domínguez believes that this week will be decisive for the team. “That’s for certain. We have two games in a few days time that could decide the future of the team; we’re aware of that and we’re going out to win both of them.”

With respect to last Saturday’s match against Sevilla, the ‘rojiblanco’ home-grown player said that “I thought the team played well, was very stuck-in and committed, with everyone giving one-hundred percent. We deserved the victory but in the end came away with a draw. All things considered, if we beat Getafe on Wednesday, that draw would be such a poor result.”

Regarding the problems that the team has been having recently in winning games at home, Domínguez pointed out that “we started off the season at the Calderón well and have dropped off a bit. We can turn this situation around with hard work. Furthermore, we know that at home with the supporters that we have, we have to make the Calderón a fortress. From here on out we have to win all of the points at home.”

The fact that their opponents seem to score every time they attack is, to Domínguez, a “question of streaks. It’s true that Sevilla had three chances and scored two, and we had seven or eight and two goals. Those are situations of the game and this is football. Sometimes you’re more accurate than others and if the opposing squad is accurate then it’s tough.”

Concerning the idea of settling into the centre of the defence, the player from Madrid stated that “I do the same work whether I’m in the starting line-up or on the bench. That’s my job and what they pay me to do. I try to perform as well as I can, defend these colours, and give everything for the team.”

He was asked about Forlán and the substitution against Sevilla. “We understand the situation as footballers. Lots of things go through your head in the heat of the moment, but both the manager and his teammates understand what happened. Forlán made that gesture when he was heated. It happened to Forlán and it could happen to anybody tomorrow.”

With respect to whether the dressing room is used to Quique Sánchez Flores’ rotations, he highlighted that “we have a good squad and right now the situation has led me to be playing, while Perea has to sit out. That shows that anyone can come on and play well. There are 20 of us players in the squad and we all want to play as much as possible. the guys train hard and the manager decides the eleven who start.”

Regarding the controversy of the schedule, the one thing he’s clear about is that he doesn’t like to play on Mondays. “It’s true that I don’t agree with playing on Monday, but those who make up the schedule are the ones in charge and we have to obey and play.”

To finish, he was asked whether the poor results, with the exception of the win over Zaragoza, may have affected the team. “We had bad results, but we picked our heads up after the victory in Zaragoza. Our morale is high and the team is working well. Each player gives one-hundred percent and you would only need to go into the clubhouse to see the face of every player, exhausted by the effort. And that’s the important thing. Starting with that, the results will come.”
