Another magical night for the red and white’s in this competitions, the Cup was back at the Vicente Calderon. Diego Pablo Simeone’s men went out with the same objective as always, to play well and to beat Sant Andreu. With an overwhelming energy, Cristian Rodriguez, today Atletico captain, had the first two dangerous occasions of the game. In the first he received a good pass from Leo Baptistão and then in the second the Uruguayan international combined well with Óliver and tried his luck with a shot in the box that Morales beat away.
Sant Andreu had not troubled Aranzubía until the 15th minutes when the Catalans saw a chink of light. Mouriño launched a ball in to space and Carroza put the visitors in front. Atletico were not shaken by this and went looking for the equalizer. Insua, Guilavogui, playing his first game as a starter, and Giménez all had half chances but Sant Andreu survived Until the half time break thanks also to an Adrian penalty that was sent over the bar.
The second 45 minutes followed the same script as the first half, Atletico continually pressuring the Sant Andreu goal. In the midfield Oliver, Guilavogui and Carlos Ramos making his debut with the first team, managed the pace of the game at will. Baptistão tried, yet again, with a header from an Óliver to pass but it went inches wide. Guilavogui very active throughout the game also tried his luck with a shot from distance.
Simeone made some changes bringing on Gabi and Hector, who also made his debut with the first team in search of goals. And of course, it was Hector with that special goal. His first touch in the match resulted in a goal after a good cross from Adrian to level up the game on the night.
Spurred on by this the Vicente Calderon sensed more and Manquillo linked up on the wing with Adrian as they looked to get crosses in to the box. Óliver Torres warned first with a powerful shot well saved by Morales before Alderweireld got the winner in stoppage time. The Belgian scored his first goal for the Red and White’s to make it 2-1 ensuring the current Cup Champions progressed to the next round with two victories.
