Atlético de Madrid return to work with their sights set on Athletic

Tiago undergoes an MRI

After the loss that Atlético de Madrid suffered this past Sunday to Sporting de Gijón at El Molinón, Quique Sánchez Flores’ men have gotten back to work to get ready for their league fixture against Joaquín Caparrós’ Athletic side (Sunday 30 January at 5 pm).

Both the manager and the players know that they can’t lose any more points and to accomplish that they want to start against the club from Bilbao. The ‘colchoneros’ thus returned to work after a day-and-a-half off. The training session, which lasted approximately two hours, consisted of possession games with goalkeepers, finishing drills in teams of six and odd-numbered 8v4 attacking/defending.

The good news of the practice was the presence of squad player Pulido, who completed the work without problems after overcoming his injury. Atlético de Madrid B players Iago, Abel, Noguera and Miramón also took part in Tuesday’s preparatory session.

Kun Agüero, Diego Forlán and José Antonio Reyes held an alternative session which started in the gym and later moved to the pitch with Óscar Pitillas (physical trainer/physiotherapist). Additionally, Raúl García, Mario Suárez and Tiago underwent physical therapy treatment.

Portuguese central midfielder Tiago Mendes also underwent an MRI on the afternoon of Tuesday 25 January to discover the extent of his right hamstring problems, but no serious injury was revealed.

In attendance at the Sports Complex was Managing Director Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil, who chatted with Quique Sánchez Flores and some of his player before the practice in a show of support and confidence as the team looks ahead to the second round of league play and, in particular, prepares for the match against the squad managed by Caparrós.
