Atlético de Madrid close out the season with a draw against Alcorcón (1-1)

Juanfran equalizes after Babin scores for the home team

Atlético de Madrid put the finishing touches on their season with a friendly match against Alcorcón, after which the ‘rojiblanco’ players headed off on holiday. The match ended in a one-all tie that left the fans in attendance at the Municipal de Santo Domingo happy. The home team is in the final stretch of the season, after having made their debut in the Second Division and clinching a spot in the division for next season, with two games left on the schedule and the slightest of chances to make the promotion playoff spots, although they’d already won their specific battle of permanence.

It was time to see a different match, without the internationals (Forlán, Godín, Perea, Elías and Agüero), and Reyes, injured, Koke, with the Under-19s, Diego Costa, with permission from the Club, and finally De Gea, who was attending the Draft Awards to pick up a prize. The defense was put together based on circumstance, as Antonio López had to play in the center together with Pulido and with Valera and Filipe on the wings. Assunçao and Fran Mérida returned to the starting line-up, which include Noguera and Borja as the striking duo.

The fact is that the match began with pace, as both sides had scoring chances, first with a shot from Quini and another shot from Juanfran that the home goalkeepers tipped wide for a corner kick. A bit later Juanfran again forced Eladio to make a save on a free kick. There weren’t many clear chances in the first half and the home squad had two more from the feet of Jeremy and Fernando Sales, although they didn’t unsettle Joel.

What had been a friendly match almost erupted into something more due to an ugly challenge from Nagore on Filipe Luis. The Atleti player became enraged and confronted the ‘amarillo’ player as things got heated between the two teams. The referee cooled things down with two yellow cards, one for Alberdi and another for Juanfran.

Anquela decided to give all of the players he called up a chance to get some minutes against Atlético de Madrid, while Quique Sánchez Flores sent on César Ortiz and Mario Suárez at the half and slowly began making substitutions.

The match came back alive because the home team came out determined and David Sanz almost surprised Joel, but his shot from the top of the area crashed off the goalkeeper’s left post in the 50th minute.

The goals came in the final stretch of the game. First the home team took the lead through Babin in the 71st minute, after a scrum inside the area. Then, six minutes later, Juanfran pressured the home keeper and forced him into a poor clearance, which fell to the winger and he pushed into an empty net for the final score.
